Two countries. One route.

How to play Border Hop

Name the countries or regions that connect the start to the finish. You can guess in any order. You win when your guesses form a continuous route; any valid route counts.

Guesses and hints

Your allowance is the shortest route’s intermediate countries plus extra guesses (four for routes up to three countries, five for four to six, six for longer routes). Each guess uses one turn. Reveal next country adds the next missing country on a shortest route from your current guesses and uses one turn. A hint can complete the route.

Map modes

By default, only the start, finish and countries you have revealed appear. Show all country outlines reveals the surrounding boundaries, without using a guess. It does not reveal country names. Show country initialslets you hover, focus or tap any country to see its initials (for example, C... for China and UK... for United Kingdom), even while outlines are hidden. This also uses no guess. Shared results say if outlines or initials were enabled.

Can I cross the ocean?

No international sea crossings. Countries sharing a sea border are not connected. Ferries and flights do not count: you cannot cross Spain to Morocco or Russia to the USA.

  • Land borders count, including countries that meet at a corner.
  • The Channel Tunnel connects the UK and France. The Øresund bridge and tunnel connects Denmark and Sweden.
  • Bridges connect the parts of Denmark, Türkiye and Croatia; southern Croatia connects to Montenegro via the Pelješac Bridge.
  • You may travel between islands within Indonesia, Malaysia and the UK. This lets Ireland connect to the UK, and allows routes through the Indonesian and Malaysian islands. It does not create sea crossings to other countries.
  • Other routes use each country’s main land area. Overseas territories and disconnected exclaves do not create shortcuts: Kaliningrad cannot connect Poland to mainland Russia, and mainland France cannot jump to South America.

Reading the feedback

Connected means your guess reduces what is left to find and joins the start. Closer reduces what is left but is not connected yet. Detour does not reduce the number still needed. No connecting route means the country is outside the start’s connected land network. A later guess can connect an earlier one.

Countries and regions follow Natural Earth’s map. These are the game’s geographic connections, rather than travel advice or border-entry rules. A new puzzle arrives at midnight UTC. Refreshing starts a fresh attempt.
